Central to the Science Curriculum is the inculcation of the spirit of Scientific Inquiry. To nurture students as an inquirer who enjoys science and leverages on Science to fuel their spirit of curiosity, the department created Knowledge Building Classrooms. This is made possible with close strategic partners like the Ministry of Education, National Institute of Education and EduLab.
Knowledge Building classroom places students’ ideas at the centre of teaching and learning. In a Knowledge building classroom, teacher and students take on the role of knowledge builders. We leverage on the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to pique students’ interest to explore and build meaningful learning and take ownership for self-directed learning.
In these classrooms, students initiates inquiry and constantly question and build on one another’s ideas on the content area and support each other in rethinking and refining the explanation to problems through online and classroom discussion. They are thoughtfully involved in the process of developing, supporting, analysing their inquiry by tracing through their ideas and pieces of information. We leverage on the use of Knowledge Forum which is an ICT platform to archive students’ ideas and information.
Teachers advocate learning beyond textbooks, arouse curiosity in curricula based issues and facilitate students in the construction of knowledge based on students’ emerging responses. They hold back their response to the accuracy of ideas and instead focus on designing productive ways in which the students can collaboratively refine the idea or critically reflect to identify gaps in their own explanations.
Students enjoy KB lessons. These sessions pique their interest in learning and build in them confidence to seek clarification, analyse data and formulate answers to burning questions. KB is the quintessence of `learning ignite’ where students’ learning far surpassed their learning experience in conventional teaching environment.
Knowledge Building has garnered a lot of interest among educators and we have shared at multiple platforms since 2013, including the 4th International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology (iCTLT 2014) .
Science Cove ~ Science Learning Centre
Aims: To provide an environment conducive for students to explore, learn and share about Science.
Acts as a resource centre to excite and stimulate interest in Science.
Students are encouraged to come to the Science Cove and use the resources available to do their independent learning.

Ping Yi Eco Pond
The aim of the pond is to create an outdoor learning environment in the teaching and learning of science. The two ponds are good sites for the students to conduct science experimentation and research and to appreciate nature in a relaxing setting. The pond has become a good ecosystem for a variety of living organism.
