Craft & Technology Department comprises of 4 subject areas – Design & Technology, Home Economics, Art & Music.
Except for Music, the other three subjects are coursework based where the students are first grounded in their respective discipline basics before embarking on theme related projects to realize their potential in creating design products, visual art pieces and healthy and balanced meals.
Design & Technology (D&T)
Since 2007, the D&T Department has undergone a major shift in strategic direction by empowering managers by project management and productivity enhancement, curriculum alignment with national goals and cultivating the spirit of Innovation and Enterprise in both our knowledge managers and students.
D&T education in Ping Yi Secondary is a four year journey of discovery. The first two years it is a compulsory subject where students are introduced to elementary concepts of design and technology as well as the acquisition of simple technical skills in the workshop through some design based projects on an inpidual as well as group basis. By the end of two years, the students should be able to grasp any potential design problem solving situations and apply what they have learned and provide innovative and creative solutions to these problems.
They will progress to the next phase of elective coursework based curriculum where they will experience an environment where their creativity and thinking skills will be stretched to their maximum limit to realize the potential in them to.
The learning of Home Economics has undergone many changes in recent times. The focus centres much on process skills in coursework, which aims to build self-directed learners with analytical skills beyond basic cooking abilities. With a comprehensive curriculum on the scientific and practice aspects of food from nutrient information to effects of food on well-being, this discipline also hopes to develop students to become confident in selecting, handling and preparing food as well as applying knowledge to daily living.
In Ping Yi, the rigorous curriculum is made more fun and manageable with group work and problem-based learning. We are also continuously refining our teaching strategies to make student-centred activities succinct and effective namely bus-stop activities, sensory tests, videoing and verbal presentations.
It is crucial to build the fundamentals in their first 2 years so that taking Food and Nutrition as their elective in Sec 3 and 4 would be manageable. We are proud that the Food and Nutrition cohort over the past 10 years have been doing well, credit to the cohesive team in the department.
In line with the spirit of Innovation and Enterprise, the Art Department has positioned itself to provide a more all rounded education for the students. New techniques have been implemented to enhance learning in and out of the classroom. Art teachers are empowered with the necessary resources and experiences to make learning fun.
In order to achieve this mission, the department has set the following goals:
1. To challenge students with an intensive curriculum characterized by inpidualised instruction
2. To maintain facilities and resources that foster opportunities to experience the creation, exhibition and study of the visual arts
3. To provide opportunities for community involvement and broaden public awareness of the visual arts
The Department views educational achievement as both inpidual and collective responsibility. Art uniquely transforms those who create and those who respond. The department will continue to have the transformative value of art to connect with members of the community, enhancing and enriching lives, and making us more conscious of ourselves and others in the world.
Ping Yi’s cross-disciplinary music programmes aims to enrich Ping Yians in terms of raising their awareness in music appreciation, providing them with a holistic education and grooming them into well-rounded inpiduals.
